थॉमस ग्रेगरी के समय अमेरिका में नस्लवाद बहुत ही हावी था और अश्वेत लोगों के साथ भेदभावपूर्ण व्यवहार अपने चरम पर था इसीलिए ग्रेगरी ने अपने शरुआती जीवन में ही यह मन बना लिया था कि अपनी कला का उपयोग अश्वेत लोगों के सामाजिक परिवर्तन के लिए करना है। उन्होंने अपनी कला के द्वारा हासिल उपलब्धि “रेस इन आर्ट” के माध्यम से अश्वेतों के के सशक्तिकरण को नई दिशा दी जो द सिटीजन नामक पत्रिका में उनके द्वारा लिखे गए एक लेख से पता चलता है। जिसे थॉमस ग्रेगरी के अन्य सहयोगियों जॉर्ज डब्ल्यू एलिस , विलियम स्टेनली ब्रेथवेट एवं चार्ल्स एफ लेन द्वारा प्रकाशित किया गया।
