How is an airplane hull treated to reduce drag? It is painted over. The contribution of paint roughness to air resistance is only 0.3%. However, after painting, the aircraft is still coated with a layer of varnish 30-50 microns thick. The varnish prevents dirt and insects from sticking to the hull, which affects the resistance. A painting technique is already being tested that leaves thin grooves in the paint. They attenuate transverse turbulent air movement, which saves about 1% fuel. And researchers are working on active "shark scale" type coatings capable of adjusting to the geometry of turbulent vortices thousands of times per second.
